Description
The Lanesborough is one of those London hotels that still understands the pleasure of a proper occasion. Sitting at Hyde Park Corner in a grand Regency landmark, it has the sort of address that instantly sets a tone, but what lingers is not just the architecture. It is the sense of poise. Since its major renovation and relaunch under Oetker Collection, the hotel has kept its old-world polish while quietly updating the experience for modern travellers. It feels resolutely British, but not dusty. Think ceremony, comfort and an ease with luxury that never has to over-explain itself.
Rooms and suites
There are 93 rooms and suites, all individually styled, and they lean fully into the hotel’s Regency spirit without becoming theatrical pastiche. Silks, tassels, chandeliers and rich colour palettes are part of the picture, but so are the practicalities that matter after a long day in London. Technology is neatly integrated, and every room comes with 24-hour butler service, which still feels like one of the city’s more persuasive indulgences. The standout suites, especially those facing Wellington Arch or Hyde Park, deliver exactly the kind of grandeur one hopes for here, yet even the smaller categories are designed with enough detail and warmth to feel personal rather than merely formal.
Food and drink
The hotel’s dining line-up is varied, but it all hangs together. The Lanesborough Grill remains the culinary centre of gravity, with Shay Cooper’s modern British cooking built around seasonal produce and a dining room that feels especially handsome under its glass dome. Then there is The Library Bar, still one of the more polished places in town for a serious cocktail, plus The Withdrawing Room for tea, lunch or a civilised drink, and The Garden Room for cigars, spirits and terrace lounging once the weather behaves itself. It is a well-judged mix of formality and ease, which is rarer than London hoteliers seem to realise.
Hotel amenities
The Lanesborough Club & Spa gives the hotel genuine depth beyond its drawing-room glamour. The wellness space spans 18,000 sq ft and includes a hydrotherapy pool, an expansive gym, separate saunas and steam rooms, treatment suites and regular fitness classes for guests. It is less of an afterthought than at many grande dame hotels, and that changes the rhythm of a stay. You can have the full silver-service London experience upstairs, then disappear below ground for something calmer and more contemporary. That contrast works in its favour.
Location
Hyde Park Corner is an excellent spot for travellers who want a classic London base without the crush of Mayfair. Knightsbridge is on one side, Belgravia on the other, and Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Sloane Street and the park itself are all within easy reach. It suits both first-timers and repeat visitors: ceremonial enough to feel distinctly London, but practical enough for shopping, museum time and long walks through the greener bits of the city.
Hotel rating
This is still one of London’s great five-star addresses, especially for travellers who like their luxury classic rather than fashionably stripped back. It excels in service, atmosphere, and a sense of place, and the all-hours butler model continues to set it apart. I would place it firmly in the top tier of traditional London hotels, with the added advantage of a spa and wellness offering that feels far more current than the period setting might suggest.
Hotel vibe
The vibe is elegant, slightly theatrical and deeply assured. There's a lot of gilt, a lot of polish and a lot of very beautiful fabric, but the mood isn't intimidating. Instead, The Lanesborough feels like a highly refined London residence where everything has been thought through, from the doormen out front to the final nightcap in the bar. For travellers who like history, ritual and a little ceremony with their room key, it remains a very satisfying place to check into.
