French Riviera Glamour at Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes

Set on the Croisette, Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes blends timeless Riviera glamour with polished interiors, palm-fringed views, refined dining and the unmistakable beach-club buzz of Cannes at its most chic.

Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic Cannes has the sort of old-school Riviera confidence that instantly makes sense on La Croisette. Opened in 1926 and set between the beach and the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, it's woven into the mythology of Cannes, but it doesn't feel trapped in sepia. There's still a touch of cinema about the place, naturally, from the gilded lobby to the art deco lighting, yet the overall mood is fresher and more contemporary than you might expect from a near-centenarian grande dame. What I like most is that it understands its role perfectly: glamorous, yes, but also easy, bright and deeply tuned to the rhythm of the Cannes seafront.

There are 349 rooms and suites in total, and the scale never seems to dilute the sense of polish. Recent refurbishments have helped, with 60 rooms reopened in early 2024 after total renovations, and the current look appears lighter and more pared back than the public spaces, with cream and taupe tones, tall windows and a strong emphasis on sea-facing light. The best categories lean into fantasy in a very Cannes way, from themed suites such as the Riviera and Christian Dior to the Majestic Suite, which comes with a heated rooftop pool and wide Mediterranean views. Even so, the appeal here is not only spectacle. The rooms seem designed to soften all that Croisette drama once the shutters close.

The dining line-up has real pull, and not just for hotel guests. Fouquet’s remains the social centre of gravity, bringing its Parisian brasserie pedigree to Cannes in a setting that feels lively rather than formal. Down on the beach, Ciro’s Cannes now takes the lead for seafood and long, sea-breezed lunches, with a private beach set-up that fits the address beautifully. There's also La Terrasse Piscine for lighter poolside dishes and cocktails, plus Bar Fouquet’s, which keeps the glamour going after dark. The overall feeling is well judged: a proper Riviera resort hotel that knows people want options, atmosphere and at least one martini before dinner.

The amenities are substantial without feeling overdone. There's a heated outdoor pool, a private beach, a 24/7 fitness centre and a spa that spans 450 square metres, with Biologique Recherche treatments, a hammam, sauna, hair salon and four treatment rooms, including a double room. Families are also unusually well served for this level of glamour, thanks to the Studio by Petit VIP kids’ club for children aged four to 12. In practical terms, that makes Le Majestic more rounded than some of its flashier neighbours. It can do film-festival energy, certainly, but it also knows how to occupy a week in the sun with genuine ease.

Location is one of the hotel’s strongest cards. On Boulevard de la Croisette, directly facing the sea and just steps from the Palais des Festivals, it places you right in the middle of Cannes at its most cinematic. The old port is close, the shopping is immediate, and the whole town tends to unfold on foot from here. For a first stay, it is hard to imagine a more fitting address. For repeat visitors, the appeal is the same: you're plugged directly into the polished, sunstruck theatre of Cannes without needing to work for it.

It's a 5-Star hotel, and I would place Le Majestic firmly in Cannes’ top tier. Condé Nast Traveller calls it a quintessential Cannes property, and that feels exactly right. It may not be the most minimal or the most fashion-tamed option on the Riviera, but this is Cannes at the end of the day, and it's definitely a hotel that understands why people come here in the first place.

The vibe is classic Riviera glamour with a distinctly filmic charge. There's always the suggestion that something is about to happen, a dinner, a party, a premiere, but the hotel is also comfortable enough to work outside festival fever. That balance is its secret. Le Majestic is starry without being absurd, polished without feeling cold, and lively without losing its sense of refinement. In a town that can sometimes mistake exposure for style, it still feels like the real thing.
