The Berkeley London

In Knightsbridge, besides Hyde Park The Berkeley offers contemporary polish and heritage calm

Description

The Berkeley has that rare London trick of feeling thoroughly established and entirely current at once. Set between Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Hyde Park, it carries the pedigree of a long-standing grande dame, but the mood inside is lighter, sleeker and more design-led than many of its old-guard peers. This is not a hotel leaning too heavily on nostalgia. Instead, it feels considered, polished and quietly self-assured, with a distinctly modern sense of comfort woven through the glamour.

Rooms and suites

The rooms and suites are among the hotel’s strongest calling cards. Maybourne describes them as a collection shaped by acclaimed designers, and that sense of authorship comes through in the detail: calm palettes, tailored furnishings and a residential ease that stops the luxury from becoming stiff. Several of the top categories come with notably generous terraces overlooking Hyde Park, Belgravia, or the wider skyline, which gives the best stays a welcome feeling of breathing space. Even the more standard categories read as proper retreats rather than merely smart crash pads in SW1.

Food and drink

Food and drink is where The Berkeley feels especially lively right now. La Môme London brings a Riviera mood to Knightsbridge, with Mediterranean cooking, a terrace and just enough theatrical flourish to keep dinner from feeling dutiful. Then there is Cedric Grolet at The Berkeley, the pastry chef’s first patisserie outside France, which has become a destination in its own right for viennoiserie, illusion cakes and a French-leaning take on afternoon tea. The Berkeley Café handles all-day dining, while The Berkeley Bar & Terrace remains the sort of place that understands the value of a well-made cocktail and a little atmosphere.

Hotel amenities

For a city hotel, the wellness offering is unusually persuasive. Guests have access to the heated rooftop pool, open to hotel residents and framed by wide views over Knightsbridge, Belgravia and Hyde Park. More significantly, every stay now includes complimentary membership to Surrenne Belgravia, Maybourne’s four-floor wellbeing club, which includes a 22m lap pool, treatment rooms, saunas, steam rooms, studio classes and a Tracy Anderson fitness space. It makes The Berkeley feel more rounded than many luxury London addresses, where the spa is still too often an afterthought.

Location

Wilton Place is a very good address to have. Hyde Park is just over the road, Harrods and the boutiques of Knightsbridge are close by, and Belgravia’s quieter, more residential polish is on the doorstep too. It is central without feeling hectic, which is not a small thing in London. For first-timers, it places some of the capital’s most recognisable landmarks within easy reach. For repeat visitors, it offers a more measured and liveable corner of the city.

Hotel rating

Editorially, The Berkeley sits firmly in London’s top tier. Condé Nast Traveller describes it as a totally sophisticated London classic, and Maybourne notes that it holds a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating for 2026. Those labels help, but the more convincing point is that the hotel feels complete: strong dining, serious wellness, thoughtful design and service that seems intuitive rather than over-rehearsed.

Hotel vibe

The vibe is elegant, fashion-aware and quietly upbeat. There is glamour here, certainly, but not the stiff, over-upholstered sort. The Berkeley feels made for travellers who want classic London polish with a more contemporary rhythm, somewhere that can do pastry, pool, cocktails and genuinely good sleep without making a performance of itself. A surprisingly difficult balance, apparently, though this city does enjoy charging five-star rates for far less.
